IC INFORMATIONCharacters Name: Lumi
Age: About 800
Canon Point: The beginning of Chapter 4
Species: Witch
Gender: Female (all the way around)
Orientation: It's hard to say. She is married to a man, but it was a trick, so it wasn't as if she got to choose. As of right now, she hasn't been shown to be romantically interested in anyone, but I'd lean towards straight.
History: First off, Hemlock takes places in 19th century Scandinavia. No exact location is given, but considering the main human in the series was born in Sweden, it can be assumed that that is where it takes place.
Transcribed below is Lumi's history and the history of the witches as told by herself. A new paragraph indicates a new page:
Once upon a time...when the humans werestill young, a great witch appeared. Powerful and talented in the magical arts, she came to be known as Baba Yaga, and the witches took her as their queen.
But Baba Yaga had no patience for trivial titles. She preferred to be left alone, wandering the earth in search of knowledge. The Night Things agreed to teach her dark magic, in exchange for a son.
And so her first child was born, the dark mignight, Prince Sindri. The Night Things gave him the back horse, Hrimfaxi, that he might bring night wherever he went. Hearing this, the Dawn Folk became suspicious, and approached Baba Yaga...
They demanded a son of their own, and in exchange, agreed to teach her the magic of illusion. Thus second son was born, the bright dawn, Prince Simo. The Dawn Folk gave him the white horse, Arvakr, that he might bring the dawn wherever he went.
The the Day People taught Baba Yaga white magic, in exchange for nothing...But she offered them her third son, anyway, and they gladly accepted. And so her youngest child was born, the red sun, Prince Sisu. The Day People gave him the copper horse Skinfaxi, that he might bring day wherever he went. When Baba Yaga returned, the witches saw her three sons and their three horses...And took familiars of their own in celebration. Now, Baba Yaga, as you know, ages each time a question is asked of her.
Thus, she granted each of her sons a single question that when they asked something of her, it would only be of great important. Years passed, and Baba Yaga grew even older.
Humans spread and magic withered. The trolls retreated to the mountains, the elves to the forests, the mermaids to the deep seas. Baba Yaga saw this, and she saw that humans would continue to grow and so she abandoned this world, withdrawing to the other places.
The youngest prince, Sisu, followed her, vowing to light her way. Left behind, Sindri became the king of the witches. But what comes from the darkness inevitably strays back into the shadows.
He was selfish and cruel, caring little for his subjects. Eager to learn the wicked magic of his fathers...he sold witches to demons and devils for their wisdom. Not even his own familiar was spared. Sindri murdered his horse in his terrible search for power.
When all seemed lose, Prince Simo, the second son, used the question granted to him by his mother and with the answer, defeated Sindri, sending him into exile.
Here is where Lumi comes in. Lurking in a dark cave, Sindri called out to a young witch in the winter snow. Foolishly, the young witch called came to him when he called for her, even though she could only see a shadow of his darkness, his new form. Once she approached him and tried to help him and ease his cries, he grabbed her by the foot and transfered a ring from his finger to her foot. Scared, she ran, though the ring around her ankle bound the two eternally. That young witch was Lumi.
It was later that Lumi met her familiar, an old crow by the name of Suul. The two spent hundreds of years together, though Suul was centuries old. To ensure the safety of her familiar, Lumi ate her, keeping her soul safe. This would happen much later, though.
Lumi soon realized her fate, being bound to Sindri. The youngest son, Sisu, came to her on a day, not far from the day she was bound, calling her sister. He informed her that she was now married to Sindri.
Sindri's ring not only binds them, but it is impossible to get off. It also means that no harm can befall her. Anytime danger is near, he will rise to protect his wife, though only because he needs her help. She has refused to assist him since the marriage, though, and has been entrusted by the palace of witches, now run by King Simo, to poison her husband and to keep him paralyzed with the herb hemlock. In order to make this potion, several ingredients are needed, including the breath of a familiar. Having eaten her own, it was time to find a new familiar. One morning, after a ten year sleep, it was time to feed her husband his brew and to throw it into the shadow realm he now inhabited.
Because Suul's soul was inside of her, it sent her a sign of her new familiar by making her cough up a feather with the words "Frog's body" on it. Assuming her familiar was a frog, she raced off to the forest in search of a frog. Finding one, she slit her wrist and wrote on it in her own blood. Around this same time, a local village boy was racing on horseback to market. A storm was brewing, both literally and figuratively, and a thunder startled horse threw its rider from its back. Tristan, the village boy, was thrown and landed on his head, cracking his skull and killing him. His soul then, because of the magic word written on the belly of Lumi's nearby frog, then transferred into the amphibians body, making him her new familiar. Lumi, though, did not realize this, and though angry that she could not transfer Suul's spirit into it, took him home and kept him warm and fed him. Her new frog pet, that seemed to sprout three eyes, was Tristan, and she soon told him of his fate as a frog. Tristan's last name, Grodkropp, actually meant 'Frog's body' in Swedish, so it was discovered to be destiny that the two would meet.
Tristan adjusted quite quickly to being a frog, and after a little development on his part, Lumi's next advancement comes in the form of going to market to trade her wares. There she meets a witch she's known for quite some time, Ulla. Ulla tells her that she's wanted by the king, which confuses Tristan. Once at the underwater palace of the witches, Ulla takes Lumi to a cell, which then startles Tristan even more. It is then she explains to him her story and that she is as much an outcast as her husband, serving only the duty of poisoning him so that he may not rise again. The last time she gave him a paralyzing tonic, Sindri revealed to her that he had developed a tolerance for the drug of hemlock, and that it was now useless to stop him. King Simo found out and called her to the palace to make sure that she knew that something stronger was necessary in order to full control him now, and that she had better figure out what.
Sindri can come to the world of the humans and witches as a black shadowy form, always there and lurking in the shadows, shape shifting to it's pleasure. Going to the other realm where he resides as a person, though, was now necessary. Chapter four starts with Lumi and Tristan preparing themselves for the journey to the cold other place.
Appearance: Here Though her hair is more blue than green, normally.
Personality: Much like her name suggests, Lumi will at first come off as a little frigid. She's used to spending much of her time alone, save for a large snail she lives in and her shadow husband, Sindri. She's polite, uses a little less than formal diction, and rather mysterious at first glance. She's pretty much your typical witch going off of appearances and first meetings. She does, though, know how to treat those that she does like well.
Lumi is actually quite friendly under the surface and once you get to know her. She commits acts of kindness for Tristan without being asked and takes good care of him, even when she didn't know he was to be her familiar. Though it takes a while, the two do become quite close and friendly. Upon first meeting him, she was abrasive, brash, and angry. Living in solitude and being exiled did a number on her, obviously, though her childhood personality has never really been shown. She can come off as quite irritable and lashing, though it goes back to how abrasive she is when people first meet her. Though, when she's talking to someone who is chipper, she is quicker to soften.
Though she's a bit hard to get along with initially, she does soften quite easily and is a very helpful person. When she was younger, she approached a man she didn't know because he needed to be healed and it ultimately did her more harm than good. Even having a past of helping people and receiving awful consequences, she still tries her best to supply people with what they need and offer those who are in trouble a kind heart.
She's a practical gal, choosing things that are easier to walk in over beauty, and this also applies to her magic, habits, and every day doings. She's about 800 years old, so she has become accustomed to the old ways of doing things, though it's shown that witches do progress and change with the times, both to blend in and to keep with an advancing human society. She uses an older and now less taught form of magic that uses more blood and tears than wands and thoughts. Potions aren't a specialty of hers though; they get the job done but never come out with any kind of good flavour, though the proof is in the pudding. Or potion, in this case. Lumi is said to not be a very good cook all the way around. She can come off as a little insecure about how old-fashioned she is, but at the end of the day, she gets the job done no matter what, and does it well. Also, being old fashioned and having experienced a lot, she knows quite a bit about history, but pretty much only the Scandinavian sort.
Once she's attached to someone, she can come off as a bit motherly. She makes her frog familiar hats and coats for the weather and takes wonderful care of him, despite being a human familiar. She's an intelligent person, melancholy, and seems pained when speaking of her husband and what he's done to her. Overall, she's a good person, but she takes some getting used to. That's alright, though, because she'll have to get used to you, too.
Abilites: Being a witch, Lumi can use magic. She does admit, though, that she's no good at it. Or at least, a certain kind. The magic that she uses is natural and requires sacrifice, a tit for a tat kind of magic with blood and dirt and spit. The dirty kind. It's more powerful than the new found techniques of wand magic that are more complicated than earthier magic. It's older than wand magic and less used in the time that she's living in. She's quite intelligent, but in the field of magic and reading, and average in most others.
Other: Lumi is a Finnish witch whose name means snow. She has black eyes, tends to wear practical working dresses, and dresses warmly (living in Sweden does that to you).
SAMPLESFirst Person: [ It's been a few months since Lumi has been in Holly Heights, and she's finally sort of figured out the buttons to press when turning on her phone. It hasn't stopped her from using it as a mortar, for less of a better tool to use. She at least knows what side to hit with to turn on her feed button, now. ]I've been here quite a while and all I've really gathered in way of spell casting is some mud in a jar, some red tinged leaves from a gutter, and a range of spices I've traded with neighbors. Soap bars are in pretty high demand. There's also some snails I picked up from several lawns but using them is complicated.
[ There's a certain large dinosaur snail she can't help but miss at the moment. ]I'll try to set up a stall on the lawn again sometime soon. I'm pretty sure if I just gather a few more things, I can figure out how to do something with my magic. A spell book or two would help out a lot, too.
Third Person: A large eye peeks into the lense of a cell phone, closely examining it. "I've never laid eyes on one of these." she smirks bitterly. "I've missed a lot. Old souls like mine can't compete."
Lumi sets the device back down on the counter, right next to her new little finely bound packet of information. That will be read at a later date. The important thing right now is information of a more physical kind.
Examining the counter, she touches almost every appliance, trying to see if she can get any kind of read or intuitive vibe from one of them. All she can feel is cool metal and the vibration of power, but not any kind that she's felt before. In this new world, magic must be a lot more discreet, she ponders.
Suddenly, she stops at the kitchen knives. Magic with knives and blood she is familiar with. Recalling seeing a broom in one of the previously checked closets, she races to grab it, taking a sharp knife with her. Finding the door again, she exits the house, running onto the lawn.
Quickly, with a skilled hand, she cuts about a half an inch deep along the palm of her right hand, darkened blood hitting the surface quickly and pooling to the surface. She takes the broom, previously tucked under her arm, and places its shaft along the center.
And absolutely nothing happened. Hopefully her family comes out soon and takes care of that bloody hand. Herbs won't do anything for her here, she realizes, as widened eyes mist over.
